DEPARTMENT OF RADIATION PHYSICS

The Department of Radiation Physics, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology is organized to extend services related to the scientific aspects of applications of ionizing radiations in therapeutic and diagnostic Oncology. The important areas involve radiation Physics related to patient treatment and care, with particular relevance to delivery of radiation dose in radiotherapy for optimal clinical outcome. Utmost care is taken to avoid delivery of incorrect radiation dose or incorrect spatial distribution of radiation dose in the treatment volume. The different aspects of Medical physics are Radiological Dosimetry, Radiation Treatment Planning in external beam and Brachytherapy, Quality Assurance (QA) of radiation delivery which includes QA of the treatment delivery machines, radiation detecting and measuring instruments etc.

 Imparting medical physics and radiological physics training are also looked after by trained medical physics faculties. The Radiation safety Officer (RSO) approved by the                                                                                                                        Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Mumbai is responsible for the Surveillance of overall radiological safety in the safe use of sealed and unsealed radioisotopes in the Institute. Dr. S.Sathiyan and Dr. Shwetha B are AERB approved RSO's in the Institute. They submit Annual Status information on the issues related to Radiation safety to Regulatory Authority (AERB) on annual basis in the form of reports, on the proper functioning of radiotherapy machines, radiation dose inter comparison results, safe use of radiation sources and waste disposal of unsealed radioisotopes used for diagnosis and therapy. The personnel monitoring of all the radiation workers of the Institute is carriedout using Thermo luminescent (TLD) Dosimetry badges, which are measured and maintained by M/S Avantech Laboratories, Chennai and annual dose reports are scrutinized.

The department is recognized to carry out research in the field of Radiation Physics by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka- the first of its kind in the entire state. The department conducts M.Sc. (Radiation Physics) programme affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka and approved by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Mumbai with intake of 5 students per year. Classes are conducted by the expert faculty members of the department for M.D. (Radiotherapy), D.M.R.T., M.Sc. (Nursing), B.Sc. Radiotherapy Technology and Radio-Diagnosis technology programmes. The department is also recognized as one of the approved centres by AERB to conduct one year Internship programme in Medical Physics as partial fulfillment of their curriculum for appearing for Radiological Safety Officer (RSO) examinations.

Under the central government SCI (State Cancer Institute) project the institute got sanctioned with 4 more state of the art linear accelerators (3 – Elekta Versa HD and 1 Infinity) which are capable of treating SRS, SRT, IGRT, Gating and IMRT cases have been commissioned and got AERB regulatory approvals. Two more HDR (one with Cobalt source and the other with Iridium Source) machines, two dedicated 16 slices CT Simulator (M/S. Philips) also commissioned and got AERB regulatory approvals.
